Men's Winter Fashion 2012 - Winter Winds are blowin' Edition

Winter winds are blowing.  They were howling down the tight Toronto streets this week. I'm not surprised. I mean, it is Toronto, not like we're in sunny southern California or anything. It's just that we've been so spoiled this fall, it felt like the winter would never get here.

But it is here. And we need to deal.  Here are my thoughts on making that happen.

Lets start with some details.  Ties get a little chunkier and heartier this time of year. I'm always on board for something knit, like these great pastels above, but layer them and then layer them again.

This heartier look carries over onto other accessories as well.  I love this bag, straight from the artist's studio.  Its tough and durable, like we need to be during a Canadian winter, but its got a great touch of style contrasted against the dark coat.

And what guy can go anywhere without a great scarf this winter?

Two really great sweaters to show you here.  Above is your classic winter sweater.  Winter pattern, reindeer and the right colours. Below is all class. Fitted, great colour, elbow patches. All in the details.

Outerwear, from formal to casual.  Texture in everything.  Naturals, grey's and neutrals are big.  The Marc Jacobs double breasted beauty here has it all.  Amazing texture, fitted detail, great colour, oozing style.

These two overcoats offer very different options.  I'm a bit of a sucker for the HBC print on anything, and this peacoat will get some looks, but comfort, warmth and cool are worth all of the looks in the world.  The camel coloured comparison piece has a great warm feeling, a luxurious texture and I like the ticket pocket too.

I've saved these last two images for quite a while now, direct from The Sartorialist.  They're from the Prada Fall/Winter 2012 show from early 2012.  The whole ensemble here is what sets the look off. The confidence of the models (both well known actors), just great fit.  Something to emulate here.

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood

The One of a Kind Christmas Show and Sale has come and gone once again for me, you can still make it because it's on till the 2nd.  When I can I  try and make it every year and I like to try and purchase some sort of art.

I decided to purchase the Kensington Market type face map by artist Dave Murray.  His maps are of popular Toronto neighbourhoods but instead of streets Dave indicates the variety of businesses, parking lots and all that is in the neighbourhood!

Dave has quite a few different neighbourhoods to choose from, as well as his street sign series.  Go check out his online store to see if your hood is there!

Now I just need to decide where to hang it.

Insta-weekend

It was a shopping, eating, cuddling, napping, eating, chatting, eating, lotto winning, shopping and cleaning kinda three days. I'm full, tired and happy!

I followed Bill's advice and made it to the One of a Kind Show and Yorkdale Mall.  More on what I bought tomorrow.

I had lunch at Libretto on Friday and as per usual it was delicious!

A "kerikay" breakfast! Yum.

I didn't take any pics on Saturday  but I had a great time with my fam!

Have a great week.

Weekend To Do's - Shopping Season is here

Ah, the holidays.
They always seem to sneak up on us don't they? Fair warning, you have roughly 31 days to get prepared for Christmas.  Are you in the holiday spirit? How about the shopping spirit?  Because there are a couple of great opportunities to help cross names off that list you may be working on.

I'm sure the Eaton Centre will have a number of events taking place and a number of deals along with it, being Black Friday and all, but I'm thinking Yorkdale may be the spot to shop.  Follow the link, it lists all of the stores, what time they open and what type of steep discount you can be expecting.

If you aren't up for the Black Friday crowds at the malls, the One of a Kind show at the Direct Energy Centre might be for you.  All kinds of goods available, fashion to food, crafts to candles, hats to home decor.

If you're still feeling seasonal after all of the shopping, why not enjoy it with a Swedish flavour. Yup, Swedish.  Nothing wrong with a little random festivity in your holidays is there?

This last event may have slipped by you.  Hardly anyone is talking about it.  No media, no big events, really under the radar.  Its only the 100th Grey Cup.  And the Argos made it.  They actually did it.  Tickets are selling for an absurd amount, but most events are free, so pop in and lend your support wherever.

Eames and Others - The Black Dining Chair!

I'm a big fan of all things black when it comes to accenting a space, especially a dining space.  As such, I'm here today to share with you some of my favourites!

One of the benefits of using a black dining chair is the versatility.  The striking contrast of a molded Eames chair and rustic or rough hewn table fits into a number of styles and decor.  The above are great illustrations of this.  From the very slick modern to a blending of mid-century and industrial.  In all three of these the chair, (and this may simply be the case whenever you are putting an Eames chair in a space!) are the highlight.

They can blend as well, and very well at that.  The chrome legs add a splash of shine to these otherwise understated spaces, and some much needed contrast.  Here though, they don't steal the show, they merge into it.  They become part of the overall, and that's a very good thing.

Black warmth?  It seems counter to general thoughts, but a less formal chair painted out in black really does warm a space.  Or at the least,  breaks the formality of a space, and makes it more accessible to your guests and families.

Lastly, and really just because I love this dining area, a blend of all the others above.  Minimal and with strong contrast, but the round table speaks to informality, and warm chair cushions to comfort and east.  This space is well designed, but it's somewhere I want to eat and drink with friends.

And would you look at those black chairs!

Goldilocks and the three bears and then some

So I was given a task to find counter height stools for our display in a home show next year and to be honest I'm stumped.   I could find dining room chairs for anything and everything, however add a few more inches in height to a dining room chair and it just looks awkward.

This chair  however does not look awkward, in fact I love it. Anything made of walnut is alright in my books. However maybe to contemporary for the display.

This option is also really nice.  The wire seat / back keeps things open and airy. But maybe too many different materials for the display.

Although I may like the white with simple clean legs, I'm not sure any one else will.

Another stunning walnut chair and it actually looks comfortable. But is it the right look for the display?

A clear lucite stool is a nice option as well.  Perhaps too over done.

A Parisian bistro chair turned into a bar stool...love!  However not right for our display.

Lots of options, lots of different materials, but it's just not right.  I'm off to continue my search for the perfect chair, uummm I mean stool!
