William Morris

At least a few times a day I try to get up, off my seat.  I set down my pencils, try to clean the pencil dust and eraser shavings off my shirt cuffs and lap. Grab a breath of fresh air and clear my head.   As I was taking this little break a week or two back, one of the guys I had working on a project for me was reading through one of the most beautiful books I've seen.

Seriously great read, get your copy here!
The cover art grabbed me right away but I was hooked when I got a look at all of the shots on the interior.  This man was a pattern genius.   I borrowed it (or slipped it under my arm and ran!) and have been mesmerized with the images inside ever since.

How I didn't know about William Morris is beyond me.  Apparently very well known and incredibly, still in business! William Morris & Co. is celebrating 150 years of design.  You can get paper, you can get fabric and you can use it all everywhere.  Designers - pay attention - imagine this on one or two pieces to pop in a space.

...or this...

Just Google his name for inspiration.  There are too many great patterns to count.  For the Canadian designers, there are a number of sources:  Anne Starr Interiors in Vancouver, DWA interior Furnishing in Calgary, and Telio in Montreal and right here in Toronto.

One of the joys of this job is finding a source you didn't know and waiting
for a chance to use it!

Watermelon

I'm completely obsessed with watermelon lately and I don't just mean the fruit.  The colour is more of where my focus is.  I've always had my eye on this desk, years probably.

I had this metal table I bought from Ikea many many many many years ago , it has traveled with me through many apartments indoors and out...it's see it all.   My next place I knew I wanted to bring it back inside but it desperately needed a paint job.

I originally thought I would paint it white, black or even a darker grey.  That was until the Watermelon spray paint jumped off the shelf at me!  It immediately reminded me of the desk above.

Lots of work but so worth it!  Once I move I will take better pics with it in its new home and with fabulous new chairs!

Weekend by Instagram

A relaxing and busy weekend...equal parts of both!  styling while working, watermelon painting, breakfast sandwich eating, cobble stone street walking, red rocket riding...drinking a tea that clearly wasn't meant for me!
Have a great week!

7 Summer Fashion Must-Haves

Even though my days are filled with design and evenings filled with last minute wedding details, my mind seems to drift away to summer fashion.  This should be the last thing I'm thinking about, but I just can't help myself.  Maybe it's the over abundance of great fashion that seems to be in every store right now.  As much as I would like to buy everything, I decided on my 7 summer fashion must-haves.  (Yikes, now say that five times!)

Design Destination - Design Republic - UPDATED

UPDATED- New links, head to the bottom!

As I mentioned in my post earlier this week, I was all over Toronto this weekend.
We went east, we went west, downtown and back north.
While we were out and enjoying the sun on Queen west, I spotted Design Republic
This was my first time walking through and what a great find.  It turned out to be a huge store, with tonnes of design ideas and products.  I posted a pick earlier to my pinterest boards of one of the pics below if you want to have a look.

You really can't miss the storefront. No, really. You can't miss it. Gigantic red flags let you know you're in the right place.

As you can see, the store is large, 2 levels.  The top floor is worth exploring, take the back steps and head up. Pretty cool steps actually, and look above your head as well. I don't have  a picutre, but I loved how they were clad.

On the 2nd floor, you'll find more furniture, and get a much closer look at many of the carpets and original artwork.

They make a huge part of their inventory in house.  What they don't make is largely
(though not all) sourced from local manufacturers.
To you, this means a relatively green footprint and huge customization options.
Who doesn't want a piece they've had a hand in designing for their own home?

This pillow is such cool Canadiana.
You have the queen, the outdoors, and good, warm wool

This lime bench and bed, with a hint of tufted UK was one of my favourite finds here.  I love the faux alligator texture, paired with that industrial feeling headboard.

If you're near by, stop in, this is a Design Destination. Well worth the visit.  You'll find inspiration and maybe, just maybe, your next sofa.

UPDATE

Hey folks, I was recently contacted by Terry Edward Briceland to let me know this last pic, with the amazing green bench, and union jack headboard were his. He has a store within a store at Design Republic - Teb Interiors.  Check out their site for all kinds (one of  a kinds) of couture furniture, bedding, pillows, cool silkscreens etc.  Its some "awesome crap for your home".

I have a lot to share with you this morning.  I was all over this weekend.  Queen West, St.Lawrence, North York.  And finally, home.

Down to the market to pick up some fiddelheads,  a bit of a delicacy, and some fresh espresso for (as my wife calls them) fancy coffee!

Spent some time on Queen West as well, stopped for a pitcher a snapped a quick photo of the much photographed much music.

And finally, home. But home with cheese. :)
