These Three Are Everywhere - The "These are Everywhere!" Post

I can't be the only one having these pop up? Three, maybe four colours, with a vibrant tone but still somewhat... ...I don't know... ...pastel? ...faded? ...20's kind of feel?  They've got a serious vintage vibe and I'm loving them!

I noticed them at IDS in a few different places.

On these Owls from Urban Barn for instance

and on these gorgeous glossy tiles

and in a modified colour on these tiles.

I'm out and guess what, I'm looking for a crib.  Who knew right? Its not like I've been on one big baby stuff hunt for months or anything.  Why not?  Let's stop by Ikea, see what they have. And what do they have?  A new crib, the Somnat, and its available in these exact colours.

Keep your eyes open kids, you're going to be seeing these everywhere.

Favourite Booth at IDS - Binns and Siematic

I do love my IDS.  There is a vibe to it that sings a little.  It puts a jump in my step, gets me excited about design.  The little unexpected things are what I enjoy most, and there were a lot of them to find this year. Last year it was an unexpected chair that caught my eye, this year it wasn't a little thing, it was a big thing, it was a kitchen.

Or more to the point, it was all of the little things that make this kitchen remarkable.  Co-Designed with Mick de Guilio, SieMatic's new Beaux Arts line was put into the very capable hands of Binns.  What a booth.   I shamelessly stole the top pick from their facebook page, I couldn't get one because the booth was constantly filled with people!

I'm thinking bamboo? Slick little aluminum dividers, aluminum lids for your cling wrap and foil too.

The fully polished doors on the pantry section were a knockout, everyone wanted to get a closer look at them. Glass shelves and white boxes framed out by these glossy dark panels.

And the polish doesn't stop there.  Centered on the hood is a great stainless/polished combination for drawer fronts.

Attention to details.  Small rail and styles mitred around the panels with a fairly delicate piece of hardware.  I like the location of the hardware too, slightly above the 2/3rds line.

DeGuilio has become somewhat famous for this backsplash.  You can see it in the top picture of the post, framing the cooktop.  But what you can't see is how effortlessly it slides with that little finger pull to conceal your oils and spices.

Working side of the island, pay attention to these doors.  Not a piano finish, but a high-gloss none the less.  A simple little angle moulding around the panel contrasts with that gloss to blend the boundaries of contemporary and transitional design.

Does SieMatic do wallpanels? If they don't they should steal this design idea directly from Binns and start producing it.  Might be a lot of flat edges to dust, but seriously, how lovely is this?

Don't forget about the appliances either.  All Miele, all gorgeous, and the Brilliant White double oven pops in these rich brown panels like no appliances I've seen in quite a while.

One last little detail to point out, polished panels on the seating side of the island bling like crazy.

So bravo to IDS, bravo SieMatic, and bravo to Binns for taking a beautiful product and making it even better. This layout was great for the booth, and even better for IDS.  Amazing job, hands down my favourite booth.

In a couple of days, I think I'll do a little photo dump of a few more pictures from the show as well, more to see, more to know about! Talk to you soon.

The Montauk Experience

The Toronto Interior Design Show 2013 has come and gone and I have to say I was very impressed!  It was packed with great displays, some amazing new tiles and full of inspiration.  Last year three chimed in on our favourite booths so of course we had to do it again this year.

I was immediately drawn to the Montauk booth.  How amazing are the info cards of their product hanging from the ceiling and hanging on the walls?!

The Modern sofa with it's grey linen and leather piping is currently my favourite.  I can't even explain how comfortable it was.  Being 47" deep probably has something to do with that!

I had no idea Montauk also did chairs.  The black leather and walnut chair below is stunning.

The Grace sofa was also pretty amazing.

If only I could be the proud owner of a Montauk Sofa, a girl can dream!

Monday Morning Pics - Good Weekend

Busy Weekend.  IDS and my Birthday all wrapped into one.  And a long weekend at that.  I'm considering Thursday night part of the weekend in this case.  It wasn't exactly a University Thursday night, but I was out AND late getting home.  These days, that totally counts.

I did a little early share with you for IDS, no need to see more of that yet, wait till Tuesday! Instead, let me let you in on the other thing I did this weekend. Eat. Birthday breakfast was
Mushroom and extra-old cheddar Omelettes, bacon and good rye toast.  The best part you ask? Saving the bacon drippings to roast these potatoes in later as part of a nice healthy dinner! Look how crispy.

My loving wife, and soon to be mother, made sure I had a few gifts to open as well.  My homemade card (she lovingly? Sarcastically? Smart-ass-ly? calls me Boss), fun socks, delicious single malt, and soapstone ice cubes to chill it without diluting it.  You'll also notice the stork finger puppet on top, meaning "Save this Scotch for an upcoming celebration".

Message received.

IDS 2013 - Quick Share

I just wanted to share some quick picks from IDS 2013 in Toronto.  Much more to come.

Farrow & Ball Arsenic - Has mint green ever looked this good?  It oozes a tonality other paints strive to reach and usually don't.

The most delicious hazelnut eats I've had in ages.

Miele makes a decent Latte seem far, far, far too easy.

Monte is known for their gliders, but how cool is this black leather and walnut rocker?

Ok in the UK? Okay in my living room more like it.

Cheers to the Canadian Cocktail, the Caesar, with a twist. 3oz of Canadian 67 added in.

Thats all for now, more to come in the next week or so.  You still have tomorrow to go if you haven't gone yet. Get out the door and support some Canadian design!

IDS Warm Up - Miele Edition

Every year I hear about how IDS used to be better.  They're sick of the same ideas, its getting boring, the crowds are too large, there is a line up to get in.  Really? Really?  Then why are you there!  Its a blast!

IDS is fun.  Go in with a positive attitude, and come out with some new ideas.  Be friendly, speak with everyone.  Generally most people need a smile and they are all over telling you sources, giving you deals, at the Gala night it'll get you champagne!

Warming up for IDS was easy, last Thursday night Miele held a little get together with John Tong of the recently established +tongtong.   He gave a great little talk about which, to me at least, boiled down to two things.  Passion for design, and passion within the design community.  Apt talk with IDS right around the corner.

Was it two years ago already that Miele had their two tier booth with the brilliant white appliances hidden away upstairs?  Finally launched and I've got to tell you, I'm dying to use them in a project.  At first I doubted I find a need, but I can honestly tell you I see a million different ways to incorporate them.

The Built In Coffee System is by far my favourite in the group.  Bling Bling Bling.

Look at the details on the handle, that cool little arc.  Height adjustable dispenser, grinder, polished milk container, everything polished!  And what machine is complete without a cup warmer?

So I'm warmed up. I'm ready and excited and looking forward to exploring. See you Thursday night? See you Friday?  See you at IDS.

Bill
