Weekend to DO's

Did the season change this week?  I left a clients yesterday just north of Richmond Hill and was blown away by the change in the leaves.  For the first time this year it felt like the summer had passed on by and fall was here.

Of course, being Thursday, I was thinking about what to get up to this weekend. Now I was thinking about it with a hint of autumn bias.   Yes, you can go see Cirque this weekend, or even Sister Act the musical, but wouldn't something a touch more seasonal feel right?

How about the first (of several) Halloween themed weekend nights at Canada's Wonderland?

Or Toronto's version of the Bavarian tradition Oktoberfest? Its not exactly KW, but I'm sure its a good time.

Family fun? Down at the Harbour Front Centre, the HarbourKids Folk weekend. It is Thanksgiving weekend after all, maybe spend Monday with the fam?

Since the owners and players can't seem to get it together in the NHL, go support a different local team, The Toronto Lakeshore Patriots.

Have fun, eat turkey, and enjoy the extra day off.

Design Destination - Klaus on King East

As I've mentioned a few times lately, I've been spending a lot of time down on King East. In and out of shops of all shapes and sizes.  This past weekend gave me a great excuse. Many of the design focused businesses were supporting Habitat for Humanity with giveaways, some free design consultations, and gift cards.

Cruising through Klaus is something I would do without an excuse, so supporting habitat and having a small furniture exhibition out back was all the incentive I needed.   The importance of furniture aside for a second. What I found when I walked around the shop was that the furniture was just put there to stop me, so I could look up at all of the fantastic lighting.

Catherine Menard was wonderfully helpful inside. You see Keri has been building up the courage to get a Tom Dixon Copper Shade light (pictured above).  Catherine popped over, answered our questions and offered other suggestions that could work for Keri's space as well, like the Beat Light also by Tom Dixon (pictured below).

Here are two shots of the Raimond light by Raimond Puts.  As you can see, its available in different sizes and lets a lot of "space" blend through it.  Great light for the smaller space where you need a little of the background to bleed through to the foreground, or a view you don't want blocked by a fixture.

The Pendant Lamp by Alvar Aalto is perhaps the most elegant light currently on display (also available in black).  I love it grouped like this.  Has a fantastic contemporary vibe but the material and shape have a prettiness that I think could work in a variety of spaces.

So go down to King East, stop by and say "Hi" to Catherine and explore Klaus.  Classic, timeless, high design. You really can't beat the look, or for that matter, the value of a classic piece, when you're working on a space.

la chaise

I was initially so attracted to this drawing of the chair, the simple clean lines made me what to know more about it.

The Mattiazzi Branca chair is so classic in it's design. If you are interested in this chair it can be purchased from Herman Miller. It has sparked some inspiration for my condo and is making me re-think my future dining room chairs.

I currently have the ghost chairs and I'm leaning towards the white Eames chairs.

But I think the wood adds warmth to a space.

I saw this amazing walnut chair at UpCountry on Sunday.  The Saal Dining chair is stunning, however with a price tag of $ 795.00 it's slightly out of my budget.

If you live in the Toronto area have you ever been to of things past?  Their website is great but it doesn't show anywhere near the amount of stock they actually carry.  It's packed full of used furniture, accessories,  rugs and so much more.  This table and chairs caught my eye but unfortunately it is sold as a set.

I love these chairs around this simple rectangular table.  If only I had that sort of space.

Monday Morning Pics - King East Again!

Went down on Sunday to the King East Design District - They are calling it KEDD these days.  May even have found a sofa bed that I've been looking for at Calligaris and can you believe that Callacatta above is a porcelain tile?  This is a section of it, the whole thing measures 10' x 5'!

Anyone else find anything exciting this weekend?
